Be the Best You Can Be
It’s been a busy few months, hence my silence on here. I’m venturing into education and now teaching copyediting online.
The two courses I’m teaching are part of a copyediting certificate program. I’m excited to be traveling down this path and want to share my knowledge and experience to help others be the best editors they can be. And it’s fun to be immersed in grammar and copyediting with students every day who are also language lovers like me and want to pursue something they are passionate about.
Online teaching
Online teaching is an entirely new world of discovery on a topic I’m so familiar with, but it involves much more than sharing about copyediting.
I recorded the course lectures ahead of time for 10 weeks of instruction, familiarized myself with the lesson portal and discussion board, and learned the importance of accessibility, which means ensuring the information presented in class is equally accessible to all students, including those with disabilities, i.e., everyone in class must be able to acquire the information and be able to engage in the same way as everyone else.
Advantages of online learning
There are many advantages to online learning, and below are just a few. And whatever stereotypes are out there about an online education need to be squashed. No one is lazy or less intelligent for taking courses online either.
Relevancy. The offerings in online classes today are filled with relevant exercises and quizzes to help you in the real world, educational videos of interviews with pros in the industry and lessons on particular industry topics, and related readings in trending textbooks and workbooks. And the instructors are those who have the working experience and education to answer your questions.
Comfort and convenience. All materials are accessed from an online platform, and you’ll access them from the comfort of your own home.
Cost. Online programs are relatively cheaper when compared to a traditional campus setting.
The path of education is a chosen one, but if you’ve always wanted to become a copy editor or further your education, online learning could be worth considering.
UC San Diego Extension has some excellent editing and writing certificate programs.
